GMU in the Final Four
I am not big into March Madness. I have never filled out a bracket, and college basketball is minor league basketball in my opinion. Most of the top Division I players are not “student athletes;” they’re athletes that go to class sometimes while waiting for an NBA contract. I did my undergrad at a Division III school with no athletic scholarships, where we really were student-athletes. Having said that, it is just really cool that George Mason is in the Final Four! In addition to the fact that my English lit degree is from there, I grew up almost across the street from the campus. I watched it grow from a few buildings in the middle of a vast expanse of forest to what it is now. My mother works in the legal department there and sees the coach often. (He doesn’t know her, but he always says hello.) My dad taught there for a few years, and my sister has a teaching degree from there. I was even on their radio station a few weeks ago. I had dinner at my parents’ house last night, and we went out on the front lawn to watch the fireworks on campus when the team arrived back after beating U Conn downtown. It’s very surreal.
